Kain Performance Multi-Sport Team rocks the San Diego Coast at the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon in Oceanside
For Immediate Release - 3/30/08 Oceanside, Calif.
The first race of the triathlon season was held here in Oceanside
today
under some pretty tough conditions. The wind picked up much earlier
today, which made the swim a bit choppy and the bike very hard with a
headwind for the last 25 miles. Competitors were challenged to a 1.2
mile
swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. The swim was held in the 59
degree waters of Oceanside Harbor. The first wave of Professional Men
went off at 6:40am, followed by many more waves of amateur competitors
until 7:48am. The glare of the sun on the water made negotiating the
swim
course extra hard. John Magee, a member of the powerful Kain
Performance
Multi-Sport Team, was overheard saying how he loved the “tough
conditions
in the swim. It is much like my home country of Britain, where we train
in the English Channel”. (Magee had a mishap at the start line and
was
left fumbling with his eyewear when the gun went off).
Once out of the water competitors were off onto a rolling hills 56 mile bike ride through Camp Pendleton, into San Clemente and back to Oceanside Harbor to transition to a mostly flat 13.1 mile run along the ocean. The wind picked up early this year, making the bike extra tough! Most competitors flew through the first 25 miles aided by a tailwind, only to have it hit them smack in the face for the last 25 miles. Once he was finally out of the water, John Magee was seen crushing the first half of the bike, only to have the wind hit him in the face for the second half. Magee was overheard to say, "The Queen of England could NOT do this ride, so I will have to forge on and represent Britain, even though my quads are toast"! The run is tough, as it is all on very hard concrete, which is tough on the body! Most competitors had tight legs coming off the bike, but once out on the run most found their stride and finished in fine form. John Magee, after a very respectible ride, hit the run and was heard saying, "If not for myself, then for my country"! (He finished with a new PR and loads of repect from British folk everywhere).(checkout John's "corrected version") Times this year were slower than last year due to the tougher conditions.
The Kain ½ Iron Team was here in force today. 25 competitors from the KP Team were ready to toe the line with an international field of competitors. The KP Team has been training hard for this event and many others since the first of the year. Many KP’ers were using the race as a tune up for Ironman events later in the year, as well as a chance to qualify for North American Ironman events later in the year. Despite the tough conditions, KP had some great race performances.
