Kain Performance Multi-Sport Team rocks the San Diego coast at the Ford 70.3 Ironman Triathlon
Ford 70.3 Ironman Triathlon
March 18, 2006 Oceanside, Calif.
The weather wasn’t perfect, but that didn’t damper the spirits of the members of the Kain Performance Multi-Sport Team at the season opening triathlon here in San Diego County. The first event on the 2006 Triathlon Calendar sold out with 2,500 participants from around the globe. Many came to compete for spots to the Ironman Triathlon in October in Hawaii, or the 70.3 Ironman World Championships in Florida in November.
The KainIron Team came to get a good tough race under their belts as they prepare for the Coeur ‘D Alene Ironman Triathlon on June 25, 2006. The day began with a cold 1.2 mile ocean swim in the Oceanside Harbor. Conditions were less than perfect when the day began under rainy and cold conditions. With 2,500 competitors in the race the event went off in a wave start format. The first wave of Pro men went off at 6:40am and the 19th and last wave went off at 7:48am. Many competitors were heard complaining of the cold weather, but the Kain Team was just happy to be in a race and was heard to say, “Bring it on!”
Onto the rolling hills 56 mile bike course in wet conditions, the weather got better as the day went on. The wind was blowing pretty hard by the time the cyclists negotiated the day’s biggest climb at mile 30 of the bike course. But by the time most competitors hit the run the sun had come out and the day was turning into a great sunny Southern California day. The 13.1 mile mostly flat run went out and back along the beach in Oceanside and even had a section of “sand running” competitors had to do 4 times.
The Kain Performance Team was out in force at this first race of the year. 30 members of the KP Team made the trek down the coast to compete for the first time in 2006. Everyone on the KP Team looked great out on the course! Many KP members were attempting their first ever ½ Ironman, while many others were out to set a new PR!
Here are the folks who completed their first ever ½ Ironman (now known as 70.3 Ironman):
Joanne Wicker – 1st ½ - “loved it”
Beth Stern – 1st ½ - “easier than I thought it would be”
Jorge Breton – 1st ½ - “bring on the Ironman”
Mary Vidovich – 1st ½ - “once on land it was great”
Kimberly Mathews – 1st ½ - “I smiled the whole way”
Linda Rappaselli – 1st ½ - “loved it”

Karen Wells – New PR, 15th in 40-44 Division – Wow!
Chris Martinez – New PR – “Loved it” and looked good too!
Veronica M. – New PR – “best ½ run ever” “It took Steven forever to catch me!”
Qualifying for the Ford 70.3 Ironman World Championships in Florida in November:
Bridget Potts – 4th (30-34) (Ran an extra ½ mile when missed the run turnaround waving to adoring fans! Still placed 4th with a smoking fast ride).
Suzanne Slivkoff – 9th (40-44) Great race even on a sour belly!
Tim Naylor – 3rd (35-39) Went back and crushed the course that almost killed him a year ago! Awesome!

Coach Pete Kain – 2nd (40-44) Always race to the finish, 2nd by .1 tenth of a second! 4:33:09 to 4:33:09.1
Coach Shari Kain – 2nd (40-44) Fastest bike! Turned down a spot to Hawaii Ironman and Ford 70.3 Ironman to focus on XTERRA in October!
Finishing a solid day’s work and loving every minute of it: Mike Matthews – 15th (35-39) |
