Santa Barbara Training Weekend Recap
Chilly Weather Can't Keep a KP Down!
Wow, what a great weekend in Santa Barbara! It was a bit chilly, but the weather turned out to be perfect! We had a great weekend of training and a bit of socializing too. Thank you to all who made it a great weekend and special thanks to Jody Gold for coordinating all the meals and other prep work.

Here is a brief rundown of what we did in SB:
Friday, 2/17 - 5:00PM - Met at the Los Banos pool for a 40 minute run by the beach before the Masters Swim. Only a few takers for this, but we lucked out with a nice window of good weather. Coach Pete showed Jason C. where he used to do his paced miles and they cruised to a 5:25 mile before heading to the pool for a Masters swim workout. All logged 5-6 miles running before the swim.
Friday - 6:00PM - Masters swim workout at the Los Banos pool. Long Course workout of up to 3,000 meters for some. We were almost done with the workout when they kicked us out of the pool due to thunder and lightening!
Friday - 8:00PM - Most of the group met at Brophy Bros. for a nice meal and a few drinks. Went home early to rest for the big day on Saturday.
Saturday, 2/18 - 8:00AM - The weather was looking a bit iffy. Cold wind, rain threatening, ocean looking quite cold. Our group of tough triathletes were ready to go for an ocean swim anyway! Coach Pete and a few rugged souls take the plunge into the icy Pacific for a short (500 meters)
ocean swim. Water temp around 55 degree's, air temp around 45 degree's.
Saturday - 8:45AM - Breakfast at East Beach Grill. Tasty wheat germ pancakes and some coffee and the weather was getting better! We may get this ride in after all!
Saturday - 10:30AM - Weather has cleared up and the sun is out! It's still cool, but no rain in sight! 28 of us saddle up and head out on the Casitas Loop. About a 70 mile ride south to Ventura, then inland around Lake Casitas. Flat for the first 30 miles, then the hills start! Everyone does great and we finish with no real issues (Randy had a flat that didn't want to stop leaking). A 30 minute run off the bike is next on the agenda...
Saturday - 3:00ish - We head out on a 30 minute run off the bike. Run north towards Stearns Wharf and back. Finish with some stretching and core exercises before hitting the hot tub!
Saturday - 7:30PM - Meet at El Paseo in downtown SB for a nice Mexican meal. Great margarita's were a hit! They almost ran out of food for our group though! Luckily everyone was fed and nobody got hurt!
Saturday - 9:30PMish - Some of the group goes to an Irish Pub to tell war stories and carbo load for the next days training...
Sunday, 2/19 - 8:15AM - Meet for an ocean swim at East Beach. This time the water is glassy and air cool, but the sun is out! A good group of us go for about a 1,000 meter swim. A quick one to wake up, but we had to get ready to run...
Sunday - 9:00AM - Meet for a 10 mile run along the beach. South, then North along the SB Triathlon run course. A great, sunny day for a beautiful run along the coast. We finish up with some good core strength exercises down by the beach. Then it's off to eat...
Sunday - 10:30AM - Eat breakfast at East Beach Grill. Gotta love the cakes! Our whole group is like a bunch of rabid dogs when it comes to food now! Had to carbo up, because the next workout is still looming...
Sunday - 12:15PM - Meet at East Beach for a ride to UCSB and back through
the hills above downtown SB. Stopped for a few photo opportunities along the way. Had a great 35 mile ride to top off a great weekend of training.
***If you are counting, here is a summary of yards swum, miles biked and
miles run in our 2.5 days in SB.
Swam - Up to 4,500 meters
Biked - Up to 101 miles
Ran - Up to 21 miles
Core exercises + push-ups - two rounds
Number of cold beverages consumed...um...gotta think about that one...
Great job to everyone who came down and participated in our annual SB Training Weekend. Check out some of the photo's Randy took. We hope everyone who missed out on the SB weekend had some good training here at home. We know it was cold, but hopefully not too wet! Our next outing will be our Wildflower Training Weekend on April 1 + 2. Mark the calendars now for another fun weekend of swimming, biking and running!!!
