Love that Muddy Water

Close to home we had the Uvas Triathlon. Low water made for an interesting swim leg. Not too bad once out in the water. Long run up to transition though. See Steve Murphy's humorous re-cap!

And Guest Commentary from Steve Murphy:

Hello fellow KPers - Here is your lame attempt at a Magee-like Uvas recap: So, once upon a time...no...scratch that...early F'in Sunday morning (oh yeah...that's more Magee like)...we all meandered to

Uvas Hot Springs...home of Morgan Hills finest mud baths...I mean Reservoir of drinking water...yuck...who would drink that...oh wait I did ;)..I digress... So early arrival to Uvas...because I had to pick up my Race Packet...it was either arrive early...or drive 20 miles in the wrong direction (Sunnyvale) and back to pick up my race packet "early"...made more sense to get up a little early...but that sucked because the night before...as I was putting my bike back together for the first time since WildFlower (don't let coach Pete know)...I realized that the skewer for my rear wheel was still in the rear wheel that I borrowed and returned to Nicky Barber...ooops...sorry for calling so late Nicky ;)

The transition area was well booby trapped with rocks, glass and tri-gear everywhere...I snuck into the Tribe reserved rack...across from the Kain Rack...it was early...I wasn't awake yet. Most of the Kain crew was well prepared and ready...some Kain faces that haven't been seen (or maybe they are saying the same thing about me ;) ) were well represented...Tim...Ingrid...Ralph...pretending to race was Lori in full Kain Gear...with Don Barry (no Kain gear) following close behind...not to mention Ryan harassing us on the bike...we almost got Lori to come across the finish line, as Don dove into the crowd.

The water was a little muddy upon entry...but very warm...and it didn't taste too bad...anything tastes better than the red nasty ocean water by the cement boat (Pete...I think the beach was closed due to the red tide bio-hazard during our last openwater swim...That's WHY everyone was staring at us ;) ) I thought I was having a good swim...but the water seemed to be crowded for some time...when I finally thought I had broken from the pack with a group of decent swimmers..I then realized...no...I have just gone off-course with other directionallychallenged swimmers...I could swear that I heard someone yelling "YOUR OTHER LEFT !"

The Wave starts seemed to be a little disorganized...and after the race Caroline, and her neighbor Shiboum (sp?) confirmed the worst...after the men's 40-45 age group went...the race organizers changed it up a little with a nice "OK...LISTEN UP...IF YOU'RE STILL ON THE BOAT LAUNCH RAMP...ON THE COUNT OF THREE...GO!!!!!!!" That included multiple age groups, men and women, Athena's...Clydesdales...some odd Mtn. Bike team...and even some volunteers :)

The Bike was nice...though it felt like my brake was stuck on...which it probably was...or at least I hope it was, looking at my time. The run was nice...and deceptive in a weird way...the optical illusion turned out to be a good one...to the eye...the first 2.5 miles looked like it was downhill...kinda a mild version of the WF pit...but upon turning around and expecting a gradual 2.5 mile hill...it seemed relatively flat to a mild downhill??? I am nominating a "new" mystery spot to take over from the one in Santa Cruz..."Don't worry everyone...it's Downhill BOTH ways!" Not a bad way to end a race.

All-in-All...beautiful day...short course...downhill both way run...and to TOP it OFF...the BIGGEST FINISHERS MEDAL EVER CREATED...as Ryan put it..."that thing is so big...you could use it as a plate.." Not to mention the great J&A party afterwards where we got to hang out...eat great food...drink beer before noon...and watch the winners receive tons of Olive Oil :) Have a great week! -Steve Murphy

***Congrat's to all Uvas Triathlon finishers! Let's hope for a little rain to fill the reservoir up in 2008!
